Live Sand needs to be added early to the aquarium. Beneficial to the entire cycling process, one of the most important requirements for a strong biological system. Live sand is full of live beneficial bacteria, it breaks down nitrogen-based waste that is produced by marine life. This waste if not eliminated is what causes Nitrite and Nitrate spikes in the seawater. Live Sand acts as an immediate PH Buffering System to the saltwater aquarium. The natural buffering provided keeps PH from fluctuating which keeps marine fish stress levels low. Finally beneficial micro fauna, amphipods and copepods in the sand provide a natural food source for marine life. Without these live food sources the health of many marine species would suffer. The correct amount of Live Sand to add to a saltwater aquarium is 1-1/2 pounds per gallon for a 2 inch layer. A 4 inch layer requires 3 pounds per gallon.
