Soft corals are some of the most attractive corals found in the world's oceans. They are quite fascinating, taking many exotic forms and often have a very rich and colorful palette. Small cuttings of soft corals are easily collected from the wild. They are less prone to damage or ailments from collecting and shipping than the stony corals. Many species thrive and will grow quickly in captivity. Many of the popular soft corals are successfully propagated in captivity.
When beginning to stock your tank with corals you need to make sure that the conditions you will be placing them in will be suitable. For example, an Acropora coral would not be best placed in a low energy environment (low flow and low light). A more suitable coral for this type of environment would be a member of the soft coral family. The lower lighting and flow requirements of soft corals make them less demanding, and will also keep cost down! For soft corals the calcium uptake is lower than hard corals (SPS), so this is another thing that we do not have to worry about.
Lighting Recomendations:
All of the corals within the Soft Coral Pack will thrive under multiple standard fluorescent lights, power compacts, T5 Lighting or LED Lighting.
Water Flow:
A typical reef environment is what is needed for Soft Corals. They are generally very hardy and will thrive in a properly maintained reef aquarium. Most need a moderate to strong water flow. This is best accomplished with a single or multiple powerheads dependent on tank size, with or without a wavemaker. They do need good water quality maintained, so a protein skimmer and frequent water changes are very helpful therefore recommended.
Diet and Feeding
As these corals contain zooxanthellae inside their body, they will be able to get most of their required nutrients through your tank lighting. This is why it is important to have at least moderate levels of lighting in your tank. Leathers can also get nutrients from the water. They can collect microplankton and zooplankton with their polyps to obtain the nutrition they require. They would certainly benefit from the occasional spot feeding. You can compensate for lower lighting with manually feeding a leather to sustain for short periods of time. Most leathers will do best when they get their needed nutrition from both the water and your tank lighting.
